“It’s a Gas” – A Unique Investment Opportunity in an Emerging Industry

With a major global reserve in the US out of the picture, rapidly increasing demand for helium from a variety of high growth sectors has brought some spectacular price increases for this coveted noble gas. We see the emerging North American helium sector as an exciting opportunity for investors to gain exposure to small-cap companies that are leveraging conventional oil and gas expertise, and in some cases exploiting existing natural gas discoveries, to tap into the tremendous economics offered by helium extraction.

Helium – Macro View Update

Five major fields/facilities (BLM storage, LaBarge, Hugoton, Algeria and Qatar) supply around 80% of global upstream helium. A similar number of large players control the distribution, which is often executed on privately negotiated contracts. Data on current supply/demand/prices are therefore not widely disclosed and create uncertainty around precise estimates. Our analysis of project developments suggests a lack of new supply to satisfy increasing (price-inelastic) demand. BLM’s recent crude helium auction, priced at an average $280/mcf, highlights concerns over an impending supply shortage.

Global Helium Market to Reach $8.9 Billion by 2027

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the global market for Helium estimated at US$6.3 Billion in the year 2020, is projected to reach a revised size of US$8.9 Billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 5.1% over the analysis period 2020-2027. MRI & NMR, one of the segments analyzed in the report, is projected to record a 5.2% CAGR and reach US$2.5 Billion by the end of the analysis period. After an early analysis of the business implications of the pandemic and its induced economic crisis, growth in the Heat Transfer segment is readjusted to a revised 5.9% CAGR for the next 7-year period.
